Whether you are new to cold therapy or a seasoned veteran, you are probably doing it for the benefits of cold exposure rather than the physical workout you will get from carrying all of the ice required to keep up with it. Let us be honest: keeping track of the amount of ice required to keep an ice bath cool can be difficult. Our chiller will keep your ice bath cool effortlessly, resulting in more consistent and frequent use. Make the most of your ice bath by converting it into an ice-free bath!
With the correct conditions, the chiller may achieve temperatures in the low 40s and even the high 30s. The majority of the heat load on a cold treatment tub comes from ambient temperatures and sun exposure. Reducing the external heat load will boost chiller efficiency. Even in full sun and less-than-ideal conditions, a maximum +/-100 gallon system should be able to achieve low to mid 40F temperatures. Our cold treatment chillers can be used both indoors and outdoors, except in freezing temperatures.
Cost of Running (lower than most expect):
At $0.12 per KWh, the monthly operating costs should range between $18 and $28. The compressor and fan only turn on when cooling is required; once the water reaches your desired temperature, they turn off and just the low wattage pump continues to work.
A typical question we hear is about setting the chiller on a timer. Ideally, you want to keep the water cool at all times. There are several causes for this:
-
Cold water effectively controls bacteria (slimy walls) by reducing or preventing their growth. This drastically minimizes the amount of maintenance required to keep your water clean for extended periods of time. This means fewer water changes and significantly lower sanitizer dosages (chlorine, hydrogen peroxide, etc.).
-
If you use it on a regular basis, the potential power savings will be minimal; the heat gained during the "off" period must be released when you turn it back on. So, if operating generally costs $18-$28 per month, you may be able to save $3-$5. However, changing the water and filter more frequently is unlikely to result in a net cost decrease.
-
When you turn off the chiller, you turn off the pump as well. Pumps experience the most wear and tear during starting, and this is also when they are most prone to fail. Cycling the electricity to the chiller causes unnecessary wear and strain on the pump.
Please note: Your setup must gravity prime the pump; the pump is incapable of self priming/suction. Place the chiller within 3 feet of your tub's drain, with the bottom of the chiller at the same or lower height as the bottom of your tub; do not elevate the chiller above the tub. An excessively long tubing run from the tub drain to the chiller input may cause the pump to fail to circulate enough water.
